Dr Aashish Choudhary, Dr Krishna Naik

Abstract :

Background- Meningitis is a serious clinical condition which proceeds immediately and can lead to significant morbidity. Even with proper treatment, meningitis can damage the brain and cause long-term complications Methods- It was a cross-sectional observational study conducted at Department of Radio-diagnosis, Geetanjali Medical College and Hospital, Udaipur. Results- MRI had a sensitivity of 92%, specificity of 90%, PPV and NPV of 81% and 96% respectively with a diagnostic accuracy of 92%. Among the two false negative cases, one turned out to be with no neuro-infection. This case had mild sulcal hyperintensity on T1 contrast, iso-intensity on T2 without perilesional edema. Conclusion- MRI and CSF analysis are used for diagnosis of meningitis. MRI has a huge potential superiority in the diagnosis of meningitis. MRI can provide the images in 3D planes and various oblique planes, without causing artifacts, and it has no side effect on human body as there is no ionizing radiation. CSF may provide with etiological basis of the disease, but may miss some diagnosis, as was in our study.
